Differences Between Offshore Oil Drilling vs. Onshore Oil Drilling

Oil drilling classified into two main categories: offshore and onshore. The drilling cost have difference for these two type of drilling, including profits, time-lines for drilling and processes.

The oil drilled have been started millions of years ago at small scale but now days it is done by large scale and different machinery. Time by time they goes down to the bottom of the sea, where they eventually became obscured. Bottom of the sea, heat and pressure of the earth turned the remains into oil or natural gas which is depend on the intensity of the forces and some oil or gas reaches the surface but for much of the oil found under rock or clay layers.

The goal of oil drilling is to influence trapped oil below the rocky layers. The drilling activities dig layers to cutting the oil safely. Such kind of oil is found in many places around the world including oceans so, we used offshore drilling.

Principles of Offshore Oil Drilling

As the name told such type of oil drilling catching in the ocean waters off the shore. Approx 30 to 32 percent of the worldwide oil production occurs from offshore drilling.

Offshore drilling was started in 1950s in  200 meters deep of ocean. In the 1990s with the advanced methods and technologies drilling continuously got deeper and deeper.

Offshore drilling maximum range is 1,500 meters deep but ultra-deepwater drilling it reaches up to 3,000 meters. Some companies drilling with 4,000 meters for new possibilities of oil.

An offshore and onshore both are similar drilling process — the initial well is drilled and concrete lines the hole. The location of the oil below the seabed decide the depth of the hole. The oil is swollen out of the hole using a mixture of systems.

Rigid tubes associate the wellhead to the level to carry the oil to the surface. Underwater drilling needs a floating platform that uses negotiable risers to account for the motion that comes with being on the water. The temperature of the water, the someones are designed to support the oil tepid so it continues flowing autonomously.

Offshore Drilling Platforms:

  • Fixed platform: It works for shallow oil drilling up to 1,500 feet deep.
  • Compliant tower: It work for drilling between 1,500 and 3,000 feet.
  • Sea Star platform: It work for drilling between 500 and 3,500 feet.
  • Floating Production System: It work for drilling from 1,500 to 6,000 feet.
  • Tension Leg Platform: It work for drilling from 1,500 to 7,000 feet
  • Sub-sea System: It work for drilling up to 7,000 feet deep
  • Spar Platform: It work for drilling from 2,000 to 10,000 feet.

Principles of Onshore Oil Drilling

Onshore oil drilling on sites located on dry land and it is used 68-70 percent in the worldwide oil production.

Onshore oil production drilling, holes down into the earth surface to reach the oil below without the trouble of deep water between the platform and oil. The ground has a solid base in nature so, the drilling structures and areas are well-stacked directly on the soil.
